EL JORONGO CUSTOM
DESIGN
WOOL RUGS &
SWEATERS
In 1970 when Sabino and Ruth Aguilar began El Jorongo a few local artisans were weaving on a part time basis while their crops came in, producing a limited selection of pieces in all natural wool tones.
Sabino began to scour the surrounding countryside for high quality wool
and have it washed, carded and spun. Ruth began to dye
the wool by hand using both plant and aniline dyes depending on the season
and the colors needed.
Today El Jorongo provides the original weavers and a whole new generation of artisans with a year-round supply of natural and hand dyed wool, wooden looms and market while encouraging them to use their traditional skills in new ways.
A knitting team of over 30 women including Sabino's aunts, cousins, nieces and their families take home hand dyed Merino wool to create beautiful unique sweaters, vests, capes, scarves and hats.
