Jorongos and Gabanes

The traditional Mexican Jorongo is known by many names and few people know what a "jorongo" really is and commonly call it a "poncho" or "sarape".

A "jorongo" is the traditional garment hand woven like a blanket and with a hole woven in the middle so that it can be worn. In the State of Michoacán it is also referred to as a "gaban". However, a "gaban" is usually a standard wearing size whereas a "jorongo" is larger and is often used for special occasions.

"Poncho", which is commonly used in the US and other countries to refer to this garment, is actually a South American word.

The word "sarape" is sometimes used indiscriminately for either the jorongo or a blanket, but is properly a blanket with a hand woven pattern or design.

We can offer you Custom Design Jorongos with your name or initials woven into the jorongo itself in addition to the color and pattern you choose. This gaban is tightly hand woven in acrylic on a cotton warp.The pattern is a traditional Greca in white on a black and red background with a black and white Diamond that stretches across the shoulders at the neck opening . It measures 41 inches wide by 42 inches long when being worn and the total length is 84 inches.

This beautiful Jorongo is hand woven with the traditional Charros' Greca de T in hand-dyed Red and Black with Ivory detail. The Diamond pattern stretches across the shoulders and the Greca de T across the bottom is double. One of our finest pieces in either 100% Criollo Wool or 100% Merino Wool. It measures 52 inches wide by 40 inches long plus 10 inches of fringe when worn or 80 inches plus fringe total length.

These jorongos are hand woven in fine acrilan on a cotton warp with the embroidered logo of each of the major Mexican soccer teams. The perfect gift or buy it for yourself! Measures 36 inches long when worn by 37 inches wide plus 4 inches of fringe.Please see the other Soccer Team Jorongos below.
