El Jorongo Handloomed Wool RugsJosé, Victoriano, and Fidel began learning to hand card and hand spin wool at their father's knee over 50 years ago. By the time El Jorongo opened its doors in 1970 they were expert weavers of the traditional Purhépecha jorongos in the designs passed down to them by their father, Fidel Servin, Sr. Today they are master weavers; experts in interpreting traditional, antique and contemporary designs. José's sons, Juan, Pepé, Gabriel, and David, and daughter, Margarita; Victoriano's sons, Ricardo, Luis Pablo and Marco Antonio; and Fidel's son, Omar, are all following the family vocation of becoming master weavers on the wooden looms operated by hand and foot, which were brought to Mexico by the Spaniards over 500 years ago.

The tightly woven wool area rugs and runners they hand weave are made of natural Criollo wool from the State of Michaocán selected by Sabino Aguilar's experienced eye and spun by Juan López with plenty of twist to ensure superior wear. The wool for all of El Jorongo's rugs, runners, cushion covers and hangings is carefully hand-dyed by Ruth and Maria Aguilar with both plants and anilines, providing a wide variety of beautiful color-fast hues that will last for years. On this page El Jorongo offers you a selection of fine handwoven rugs. If you are interested in a Custom Design Wool Rug please go to the Rug Gallery for a wider variety of designs or send us your own. The unique Coaster Sets are great gifts and also serve as color & quality samples for the larger rugs for those who would like to "test drive" before purchasing. |
